Maria Sharapova WTA Final

The former world number one Maria Sharapova reached her first WTA final since returning from a drugs ban as she beat Peng Shuai 6-3 6-1 at the Tianjin Open. Sharapova, came back to the tour in April following a 15-month ban for taking the banned drug meldonium. The Russian beat defending champion Peng in 78 minutes and maintained her record of not dropping a set this week. She will play 19-year-old world number 102 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, who beat Italy’s Sara Errani 6-1 6-3.

Nasarawa Poly Suspend Staffs For School Fees Diverting

Nasarawa State Poly­technic, Lafia, Management has sus­pended four of its staff mem­bers for allegedly diverting school fees of about 90 stu­dents. Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Silas Gyer, who made this known in Lafia while briefing newsmen, said the suspension of the staff would serve as deterrent to others, and also in line with the anti-corruption campaign of the government. Gyer, who described the diversion of the fees, totally about N1.53 million, as unac­ceptable, said the management has since embarked on a disci­plinary action with the aim of recovering the money, adding that some of the affected staff members have started making refunds. He also said that due to the economic challenges in the country which have impacted negatively on projecting devel­opmental plans and other es­sential services in the school, the polytechnic has scaled down its expenses in order to meet other basic academic needs of the institution. Hurricane Nate Landfall United State

Hurricane Nate made landfall outside Biloxi, Mississippi, for the second time along the US Gulf Coast as a category one storm in the early hours of Sunday morning. At 2am local time (7am GMT) it was located five miles north of Biloxi, and was travelling north. It is the first time hurricane has made landfall in Mississippi since Katrina caused widespread flooding and loss of life in 2005. Nate had already made landfall earlier on Saturday night at the mouth of the Mississippi River in southeast Louisiana. It had weakened slightly and had maximum sustained winds of 85mph (137kph), according to the National Hurricane Centre. Nate has already killed at least 30 people in Central America and is the fourth major storm to hit the US in less than two months. The storm surge from Hurricane Nate caused flooding along the seafront in Bliloxi, and across communities in Mississippi and Alabama.

Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti, in Ekiti state, witnessed it health centre engulfed in fire raised by the institution's student during a protest on Saturday evening. The  action of the students was due to the death of two of their colleagues at the school's poorly equipped clinic,  The two deceased were both student of Estate Management, o ne of them, Oluwafemi Vincent a final year student who was admitted to the sick bay was said to have complained of a severe headache gave up on life after he was allegedly abandoned by the health workers of the clinic. while the other  died a fter he was administered some drugs at the school clinic.

Nigeria Became First African To Book World Cup 2018

Super Eagles last night became the first African side to book their place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after a victory over Zambia in Nigeria soil Uyo.  The victory gave them an unassailable lead  of Group B ahead of the final round of matches. Alex Iwobi repeated his feat of being the thorn in the flesh of the Zambians as he scored again just as he did in the first leg in Ndola. Iwobi came off the bench in the second half to end Zambia’s hope of creating a final day climax on  November 6. Before Iwobi’s strike, Odion Ighalo, John Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Moses Simon went close for the Super Eagles but failed to score. Peter Sign American Record Label

Mr. P Nigeria hip-pop artist Peter Okoye, one half of former music duo P-Square has signed a partnership deal with Empire, an American distribution company and record label based in San Francisco, California, USA. Peter who is now know as ‘Mr. P’, shared the news on his Instagram page. He wrote: “Thank you Lord Repost By @empire: “Just had a digital distribution deal with @peterpsquare! The official Empire page also made a post “Welcome to the #EMPIRE family @peterpsquare! Thank you for @kingkanja for the introduction & partnership!”. The record label has worked with artistes like Kendrick Lamar, Rich Homie Quan, Cam’ron, Busta Rhymes, Shaggy, Tyga, Migos, Remy Ma amongst others.  Paul, who is the other half of P-Square and also the twin brother of Mr. P called it quit few weeks back with a video of them and brother/ group manager, Jude Okoye in a fight making rounds on social media.

DELSU Join The Nationwide Strike

Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, activities  have been grounded as a result of the on-going nationwide strike by university unions. The institution’s chapters of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT)  have joined their counterparts in the nationwide strike called national body of SSANU. While SSANU declared its strike with effect from September 11, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had earlier embarked on strike in August. But DELSU’s chapter of ASUU backed out of the strike. However, the current academic vacation of the institution ensured that lecturers did not have much to do. According to the SSANU Chairman, Monday Izu, who spoke on behalf of the unions, said the decision to join the national body in the strike was not a matter of choice, but a unanimous decision.
