Lagos State Okay Reopening Of Cinemas, Spas And Other Recreational Centres.

The Lagos State Government has okayed the reopening of cinemas, spas and other recreational centres in the state. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced this during a briefing on Saturday. Like most public places, cinemas and other recreational outlets were shut in March to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. But while some public places like markets, banks, airports, amongst others have been allowed to reopen, cinemas, beaches and other places of relaxation remain closed. Giving an update on the development, Sanwo-Olu’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, said cinemas and other recreational outlets must obtain the necessary clearance from the state safety commission before reopening.

Following the order of the federal government, governors under their jurisdiction have promulgated date for the reopening of their state institutions. Some of the institutions have came up with memo and official bulletin for full academic activities. Osun State University, Osogbo, has released a bulletin for the resumption of academic activities to be 5th October 2020. According to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, exams with commence on 12th till 23rd October, 2020. Delta State Polytechnics, Ogwash-uku, has released a memo for the resumption of second-semester academic session, to start on 2nd October, 2020. Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa. notified all students of first phase of resumption of academic activities. LASUBEB Call Community Leaders For Schools Resumption

The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has called on community leaders to help identify vulnerable children who may not resume next week because of one challenge or the other. The Board is also seeking their support to raise awareness about its blended learning programmes on radio and television as well as on various social media channels to ensure learning continues both in school and online after the resumption. Speaking at a meeting, chairman of LASUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye-King told the leaders who are also chairmen of School-Based Management Committees (SBMC) in the 20 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) that it was necessary to bridge learning gaps as children resume. He said COVID-19 safety protocols meant that schools cannot run fully for now thereby requiring staggered or shift classes to help pupils maintain physical distancing.

School building collapses in Lagos

A school building collapsed on Saturday at Ejigbo area of Lagos State. Two days before the resumption of schools in Lagos, a three-storey building housing Excel College at Iyana Ejigbo area of Lagos has collapsed. Providing update about the incident, the  Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the building collapsed on Saturday morning due to “visible distress.” The Lagos State Government earlier announced September 21 as the resumption date for schools in the state, which many preparations ongoing ahead of resumption during the coronavirus pandemic. According to eyewitnesses’ account, the privately-owned building belonging to Excel College had previously shown signs of distress and the school was planning to renovate the structure before the collapse.

Spain Announces Local Lockdowns Amid Rapid Rise In Virus Cases

Six districts in Madrid and further areas of Spain worst affected by the coronavirus are to be locked down, officials announced on Friday, amid a rapid increase in infections. The partial lockdowns in Madrid and seven towns in the surrounding areas mean residents will only be allowed to enter or leave their area for work, medical visits, to attend school or if legally summoned, starting from Monday, said regional president Isabel Ayuso. The popular holiday island of Mallorca is one of the other areas in Spain facing similar restrictions. Ayuso said that residents will still be able to move around their areas but parks will be closed, meetings capped at six people and public buildings may only be filled to half their usual capacity.

Trump Promise $14 bn To Farmers For Pandemic Aid

In a bid to win over voters in US farm states, President Donald Trump announced up to $14 billion in aid to farmers and ranchers hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. With just six weeks left until the presidential election, Trump made the promise to the farmers at a rally in Wisconsin late Thursday, but the funds come from an existing program and it is unclear how much additional money is left to spend. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided details Friday of the new round of payments, which will distribute whatever funds remain from a replenishment provided by Congress to farmers unable to sell their products or who are facing higher costs.

Edo election: Wike’s life in danger, says Rivers

The Rivers State Government on Friday raised the alarm that the life of Governor Nyesom Wike is in danger, following policemen’s barricade of the hotel he (Wike) lodged in Benin, the Edo State capital. There were reports that policemen numbering up to 300 had surrounded the hotel, where the governor, who is the Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council in Edo State, lodged. The hotel located in the Government Reserved Area in Benin was said to have been barricaded by policemen since Friday afternoon.
