Smugglers Transport Over 500 Rice With Petrol Tanker

The Nigeria Customs Service has arrested four suspects in Sokoto who allegedly smuggled 589 bags of imported rice concealed in a petrol tanker. The Comptroller of NCS in Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara Command, Mr. Nasir Ahmad, disclosed this to  newsmen on Tuesday in Sokoto. Ahmad said the smuggled items, which were intercepted on Sunday along Koko-Yauri road in Kebbi State, had N11.1m Duty Paid Value. He said when the bags of rice were removed from the petrol tank, they have been contaminated by black oil, which is dangerous to human health. The comptroller advised smugglers to find alternative legal means of livelihood and stop undermining the nation’s economy.

Facebook Under Pressure As US Investigate Social Network

Facebook has come under fresh pressure after the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced an investigation into the social network. The company's stock was down by as much as 6% in Monday trading after the latest development following the disclosure that the data of 50 million users fell into the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. Shares briefly dipped below $150 for the first time since July 2017. That left the company's market value more than $100bn lower than ten days ago, when reports began to surface about Cambridge Analytica's use of data in Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign. However, the shares later fought back to end the session slightly higher, amid a wider Wall Street rally.

America Pornstar Stormy Daniels Sue US President's Lawyer

The America pornstar who claims to have had an affair with Donald Trump is suing the President's lawyer for defamation. Stormy Daniels filed the claim after Michael Cohen questioned her story about an alleged sexual encounter with Mr Trump in July 2006, which she revealed in details during her TV interview on Sunday night. The 39-year-old - real name Stephanie Clifford - told CBS News' 60 Minutes programme she had unprotected sex with Mr Trump after he invited her to his hotel room, then pulled his trousers down. She is seeking to be released from a $130,000 nondisclosure agreement she signed shortly before the 2016 presidential election to stay quiet about the alleged affair, with Mr Cohen having admitted to pay for it.  He has said that neither Mr Trump nor any of his organisations were part of the transaction and expressed doubt over Ms Daniels' story following the CBS broadcast, demanding that she "cease and desist".

Monkey Invade Gbagada As Residents Evacuate

Invasion by monkeys from natural habitat is forcing many residents of Soluyi/Sosanya Community in Gbagada, Lagos State, to flee. Some of the residents told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that they could no longer withstand the situation. They called on the state government to save the community from the trouble, saying the animals got into their rooms, destroying window and door nets, food stuffs and other items. The chairman of the community’s Landlord Association, Adigun Olaleye, said it had become difficult for the community to curtail the monkeys and their destructive attitude. He said the invasion might have resulted from the nearness of the community to a swamp forest that separated the community from Ifako area.

Unilorin Female Basketball Team Represent Nigeria In University Games

The University of Ilorin’s female 3×3 Basketball team has been selected as one of the two female teams to represent Nigeria at the 9th African University Games holding at Mekelle University, Ethiopia, from July 1 to July 7. According to the institution’s Bulletin issued on Monday said that Bola Orodele, Secretary-General, Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), dropped the hint in a letter he sent to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem. Stated: “Mr Orodele informed the vice-chancellor that the university’s female basketball team is qualified to represent Nigeria, after emerging as runner up at the recently-concluded national competition in Abuja. Orodele noted that the best two female teams at the Ethiopian tournament in July will represent Africa at the World University tournament holding later in the year in China.

Buhari Assure Free And Fair Election

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured the United Nations (UN) of his commitment to conducting credible, free and fair elections in 2019. Buhari gave the assurance when the UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed met him in Abuja, according to a note by the UN issued from New York. “On preparations for the 2019 elections and expected support from the United Nations, President Muhammadu Buhari welcomed continuous support from the United Nations.
