The veteran scorer Cristiano Ronaldo once again underlined his worth in Europe's elite competition as his hat-trick overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid to Juventus victory on Tuesday.

It was Ronaldo's eighth hat-trick in the competition, moving him level with Barcelona's Lionel Messi and demonstrating why Juventus paid Real Madrid nearly £100m for the Portugal star who has dominated the competition in recent years.

The fans of the Turin club had yet to see their £99m summer signing produce the sort of displays in Europe that helped Real Madrid to four Champions League titles in five seasons, but that all changed on a thrilling night inside the Juventus Stadium.


Ronaldo is looking for a fourth straight Champions League title, while Madrid were eliminated without him by Ajax last week.
"It was meant to be a special night and it was, not just for my goals but for the attitude we showed," the 34-year-old said.
"That is the sort of mentality you need to win the Champions League.
"This was why Juventus brought me here. To help do things that they have never done before."
Atletico's defeat means they miss out on the chance to play the final at their own Wanda Metropolitano stadium on 1 June.

Armed thugs invaded Ogbomoso polling unit at Oke Ola Farm Settlement, Unit Four of Ogbomoso South Local Government Area of Oyo State, and carted away thumb-printed ballot papers in all the units in the area. Olamide Adewale, who made a distress call said, “Hoodlums armed to the teeth just invaded unit 4A in Oke Ola farm settlement here in Ogbomoso South local government and forcefully ferried away all the ballot boxes en route Ogbomoso/Oyo road. They went in Oyo direction,” he said. Reports also revealed that the ballot boxes at Ward 3 Unit 3 in Ibadan Northwest were snatched in the presence of security agents around 2pm.
